Clinical Associate Professor
Dr. Sanford has six years of law school, including a double LL.M. in Taxation and International & Comparative Law from Georgetown University and a law degree from the University of Notre Dame. She attended the Concannon Programme of International Law at the Notre Dame London Law Centre in London’s Mayfair district. Dr. Sanford also studied at Thunderbird School of Global Management. She is also an ASU alumna; she earned her degree in Political Science. Dr. Sanford is fluent in several languages, including English, French, Spanish and Portuguese.
She specializes in compliance issues arising in multi-national businesses, including issues arising from tax compliance, cross-border financial transactions (money laundering) and product counterfeiting. Dr. Sanford’s goal is to develop international business responsibility in future leaders that is, above all, collaborative in nature and will enable these leaders to adequately and confidently address the number of ethical concerns and challenges posed by globalization. She believes that business ethics is a vital component of sound management practice to comply with U.S. and foreign legal obligations (such as the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act or the U.K. Bribery Act) and ultimately lead companies to a better position in the marketplace.

Barrett Honors Enrichment Program
Dr. Sanford conducts seminars and webinars in executive development programs to enable participants to gain practical knowledge about identifying and resolving compliance and ethical issues that arise in a cross-border context where laws and business norms differ. Her seminars have included establishing effective global processes for identifying and combating corruption to techniques for competing effectively across borders.
Dr. Sanford's August 2012 ISM webcast featured: The Growing Convergence of International Tax, Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Corruption: Responses by Entities, Directors and Officers.
Dr. Sanford’s October 28, 2012 ISM webinar included special guest Dr. Bruce Zagaris. Discussions included an overview of the use of forfeiture to freeze assets early in tax and other cases, the increased prosecution of banks and intermediaries for crimes arising out of abusive tax planning, as well as risks associated with servicing the accounts of Politically Exposed Persons.
Previous Positions Held
Dr. Sanford previously served as the Lead Counsel for Latin America for an industrial equipment and consumer goods manufacturer, as external general counsel to an international, privately-held integrated telecommunications services provider, and practiced in the Latin American division of a top-rated international law firm. She also served as the Assistant General Counsel of a publicly traded trade-finance institution, as primary US counsel to one of the largest international trading companies in Latin America and to one of Chile’s largest fisheries. While serving as in-house counsel, Dr. Sanford interacted extensively with foreign regulators and cabinet rank officials.

Dr. Sanford recently published The Risky Reality of Counterfeit Products, A Separate Guardian: The Strategic Value of the CECO and Enhancing Supply Chain Practices Through International Human Resource Management (IHRM) for Supply Leaders in the Institute for Supply Management’s Corporate Program, as well as A New Level of Sophistication in Cybercrimes for the International Enforcement Law Reporter.
